Talking on your mobile phone while driving is not something that the police would advise, but ironically, this violation saved a businessman's life.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night when 23-year-old Nithish Arora, a businessman and resident of Pitampura, was returning home from his factory in Kundli Industrial Area. At some point, Arora noticed that a group of men, in a white Swift car, were following him. After a while, the men rammed their vehicle in to the victim's car.

"As soon as the victim stepped out of his car, the men overpowered him and got into his car. They asked him details about his residence, work and family background and planned to kidnap him for ransom. Incidentally, when the victim was arguing with the accused, he had also been talking to his friend on his phone and had not disconnected the call," said Rishi Pal, DCP Rohini.

"As a result, the friend overheard the argument and immediately alerted the police," the DCP added.

Meanwhile, the men took away the victim's phone, forced him into the boot of the car and drove away. Arora, who was locked in the boot, said the car stopped, and he heard bullets being fired.

"That fact that I was on a call worked in my favour," said a beaming Arora. "The GPS installed in my vehicle also helped the police trace me," he added.

Arora's luck was enhanced by the fact that after a while, his car, which the accused were driving, developed a flat. While they were changing the tyre, the police caught up with them.

"The police, led by Inspector Suresh Kumar (SHO Alipur), surrounded the vehicle and the accused opened fire. The police retaliated and one of the accused was hit in the leg. While other members of the gang managed to escape, two persons were arrested and the victim was recovered from the boot of the car. A loaded pistol was recovered from the criminal," the DCP said.
