Angry residents of Gaur city gathered outside the maintenance office Gaur City in Noida Extension on Sunday. The residents claimed that the builder had been 'cheating' them for some time by overcharging them on power units

"We are being forced to pay heavy power bills thanks to builders, said Vineet (he refused to give his last name) a resident. "The power department charges around Rs 6 per unit but the builder is charging over Rs 19 per unit for genset."

It isn't just the heavy power bills that are affecting the residents. The erratic power supply has hurt them, ensuring that many of their electrical appliances such as fridges, televisions and microwaves have been damaged.

"To save money, the developer has taken a low watt connection as due to power fluctuations and overloading happens. Our ACs, televisions and microwaves have been damaged due to the erratic power supply. Only 330 KW load has been taken from Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) whereas the requirement is over 1300 KWA," said Vineet.

The residents have now threatened to hold an even bigger protest and take legal action for erratic power supply.

On its part, the builder, which is maintaining the society through a private agency, says that the power department is to blame.

"We have duly given the possession of the houses in Gaur City in Greater Noida west. Whatever we had promised has been delivered. During summers the electricity cuts are very high in the region," said Vipin Modi, Director, Gaursons Group.

Manoj Gaur, MD of Gaursons agreed, adding, "There is no power infrastructure in the region to address the issue. The infrastructure for power is being developed. It will take few years before the situation stabilises."

The builders' representatives have assured the residents that the power situation would normalise by July 31 but the residents remain unconvinced. "We also know post July 31, situation will not improve as there is need to obtain extra power connection load," said Umesh Kumar, another resident.

It is pertinent to mention that after Amrapali, real estate firm Gaursons is now facing protest from residents of its township project over maintenance-related issues.

This is not the first time the residents of this township are complaining. When the township was being set up residents had complained about the maintenance of the project and demanded the setting up of Residents Welfare Association (RWA).

The company is developing a 240-acre township 'Gaur City' in Noida Extension in partnership with another realty firm Saviour. About 25,000 housing units are being developed in this township at an investment of about Rs 5,000 crore.
