Over 300 public toilets in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area can now be located on Google Maps. The civic body has launched a toilet locator awareness campaign, under which community toilets besides those located at petrol pumps, railway stations and bus stands are being added to the database.

In a bid to curb open defecation under the Prime Minister's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the NDMC started the Google Toilet Locator Awareness Campaign in Lutyens' Delhi on Wednesday. The month-long campaign will conclude on August 11.

Last year, the civic body had geo-tagged toilets on Google maps, including the municipal toilets and those located at malls, railway stations, petrol pumps, and other public places. Also, the Council has uploaded 331 Public Toilets Unit (PTUs) on the NDMC 311 Application as well as the Google maps.

The campaign, under the Union Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), was launched from the civic body's Smart Toilet Block at Rafi Marg. "As part of the campaign, we have to undertake the exercise of locating the community and public toilets, which include municipal toilets and those at the public places. We hope to encourage people to use toilets rather than defecate in the open," Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Director Praveen Prakash said.

The campaign had already been commissioned as a pilot project last year, and now more than 5,000 toilets across the five cities of NCR — Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Noida — along with Indore and Bhopal have been geo-tagged on Google maps.

The NDMC officials said surprise gifts will be given to users who give their feedback and suggestions on the campaign on the civic body's 311 app. Also, a white paper and Action Taken Report (ATR) would be published regarding the campaign between August 15 and 21, the officials said.

"In the end, the cleanest toilet will be awarded. The NDMC public toilets have been mapped on Google so that any person visiting the New Delhi area can locate them easily," NDMC Chairman Naresh Kumar said.

Besides, the NDMC is also in the process of providing world class smart toilets having modern facilities, such as bank ATMs, water ATMs, rooftop solar panels, sanitary pad vending machines, dispensers, digital health clinic, and online user feedback tablet, Kumar added. As many as 109 such smart toilets are being constructed at present.
