One of Delhi's most wanted gangsters and dreaded criminals Manjit Mahal's close associate, Nafe Singh alias Mantri was arrested by Delhi Police's special cell on Saturday. A loaded pistol was recovered from Mantri, who carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh cash for several murders, attempted murders, extortions and robberies, mostly part of gang wars. During the last few years, gang wars have claimed several lives in Delhi, especially in southwest Delhi's Najafgarh area.

Senior officers said that these gang wars, over a period of time, led to the formation of new gangs. The active ones are the Jyoti Baba and Kapil Nandu gang, Manjit Mahal gang, Naveen Khati gang, Krishan Pehalwan gang and the recent emergence of a gang named after its deceased leader Udaivir Kala, now being led by Hemant.

These gang wars took an ugly turn when the rivalry claimed lives of innocent family members especially women, old men, and children, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, DCP Special Cell.

According to Yadav, in December 2015, Mantri and his associates shot Sunil alias Doctor, brother-in-law of Kapil Sangwan, over a monetary dispute. In response to this, Kapil, along with others shot to death Mantri's father, who was a retired police officer and severely injured Mantri's mother and wife.

Within 20 days, Kapil struck back and killed Dharmender's brother and father, who was Mantri's associate in killing Doctor. Meanwhile, Mantri suspected that Bijender had informed Kapil about his family, and to avenge this, Mantri, along with his associates, shot Bijender with 54 bullets.

In October 2016, Mantri also eliminated Vijay Lala, who he suspected was his rivals' informer. Senior police officers said that Mantri had been shifting his hideouts between Rajasthan, Haryana and outer Delhi areas. Intelligence inputs revealed that after the arrest of Manjit Mahal in December 2016, Mantri had shifted to Morni hills, Panchkula in Haryana. "On February 25, specific input was received that Mantri had left for Delhi. A part of the team already stationed in that area rushed to Delhi, and a trap was laid in Khayala near Keshopur Depot. Around midnight, Mantri was spotted and nabbed," Yadav said.

During the following investigation, the accused disclosed that in the year 2002-03, he got into the cable business during which he came in contact with notorious gangster Manjit Mahal, who used to meet him in one of the cable offices. In 2015, when Manjit Mahal, Pradeep Solanki and Ashok became wanted criminals, they used his office as a hideout.
