For torture, losing youth, innocence and 14 years of life and being framed as a terrorist, the innocent Mohammad Aamir Khan was compensated with Rs 5 lakh.

The Delhi government paid a compensation under the direction of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for the atrocities carried out by the elite unit of the Delhi Police -- Special Cell. There was no apology, no acknowledgment of mistake, no acceptance of guilt on the part the police officers and the police force and the state government.

When he was arrested in 1998, the special cell slapped 19 cases of bombings in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Rohtak and Sonepat between December 1996 and October 1997.

When he walked out of jail in January 2012 after being acquitted in all the cases, Khan had already served more time in jail than the maximum term he could have got on conviction.

On getting compensation, Aamir told DNA: "All of a sudden, I saw that Rs 5 lakh was transferred to my account on Monday. I was surprised. Then I recalled it was the amount that the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) had directed compensation to pay. But was amazed and low. This is how an innocent person who was framed as a terrorist is compensated. No apology, no acknowledgment of mistake?"

He said that on the night of February 20, 1998, his mother asked him to buy some medicines. When he was on his way to medicine shop in Old Delhi, he was kidnapped by the Delhi Police and was falsely accused of being a terrorist.

After his release, the NHRC has asked the Delhi government for monetary relief of Rs 5 lakh. He was described as a 'victim' whose youth was destroyed due to 'wrongful confinement for 14 years as a terrorist'; he 'lost his parents, his career, his hopes, dreams and everything'.
