In a bid to boost last-mile connectivity and ensure women's safety, battery-operated e-rickshaw service was launched at the Huda City Centre Metro station in Gurugram on Monday. Union Minister For Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, flagged off the service from the station.

The first fleet of 500 e-rickshaws will operate from five Metro stations — Guru Dronacharya, Sikanderpur, MG Road, IFFCO Chowk, and HUDA City Centre. By year-end, another fleet of 500 e-rickshaws will cover all 14 Metro stations falling in Gurugram and Faridabad.

The especially designed e-rickshaws with covered cabins and full-front windscreen will provide the last-mile connectivity within an area of 3-4 km around the Metro stations. The vehicles have been enabled with CCTV cameras and GPS devices.

The fares for these Smart e-rides have been kept at a nominal Rs 10 for the first 2 km and Rs 5 for every subsequent kilometre. Commuters can get the relevant information regarding this facility on the Helpline number +918010400600.

Earlier this year, the Delhi Metro had introduced its first e-rickshaw service from Vaishali Metro station.

A fleet of 11 e-rickshaws is being run at present from Vaishali, covering four different routes. This fleet will also be increased to 600, which would be run from all 7 stations falling in Ghaziabad and Noida.
