A young computer operator's long wait for justice finally seems to be coming to an end, thanks to intervention by a Delhi court. Gaurang Pandey was left 75 per cent disabled following a mishap at the Dilli Haat in 2013, when he was just 23 years old. A manager at the haat has now been booked for negligence.

On March 17, 2013, Pandey had gone to Dilli Haat with his friends to attend the Bihar Mahotsav, where a stage broke down and a heavy wooden plank fell on him. The plank damaged his spinal cord and neck, leaving him bed-ridden. His father Radhey Shyam Pandey then registered a police complaint on November 4, 2013, alleging negligence by the Dilli Haat authorities.

"When the accident took place, none of the Dilli Haat officials came forward to help us. I was not even provided with an ambulance and had to go to hospital in an auto. This worsened my grievous injuries. I have not been able to do anything since then and have been completely bed-ridden," Pandey said.

"My father is retired and has exhausted all his money on my treatment. I don't even have money for physiotherapy. I cannot go to the bathroom myself and a pipe has been attached to my genitals for urinating," he said.

During the initial investigation, the police did not find anything and filed an 'untraceable report'. The complainant, however, again knocked on the court's door on August 2, 2016. The court then intervened and asked the police to file an Action Taken Report on July 12, 2016.

Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma also ordered the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to provide compensation to the victim, who had to come to the court on a wheelchair.

Finally, the police filed a fresh chargesheet on July 14, 2017, and booked Dilli Haat Manager Ranjana Chikara under Section 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
