Man under influence of alcohol crushes student to death

Police said the driver tried to escape but collided with an SUV, after which he was nabbed by the locals. The driver has been identified as Apoorv Agarwal (32), an HCL engineer and a resident of Sector 66 in Noida.

A 20-year-old B.tech student of Amity University, Noida, was crushed to death when he came under the wheels of a Honda City car that was being reversed.

Police said the driver tried to escape but collided with an SUV, after which he was nabbed by the locals. The driver has been identified as Apoorv Agarwal (32), an HCL engineer and a resident of Sector 66 in Noida.

According to police, Vivek Vijanmuri, a final year student, was returning to his paying guest accommodation after watching a movie in Sector 18 with four friends, when the speeding car dragged him under its back tyre and hit the divider.

"The incident took place around 11:30 pm. The speeding car which crushed Vijanmuri, dragged him for a few metres. He died on the spot from severe head injuries," said Dharmendra Singh, the investigating officer (IO).

Vijanmuri and his friends were living as paying guests in Sector 126.

"After watching the movie, we went to Sector18 for dinner. We were looking for an auto, when a speeding car passed by us and within seconds he reversed it and took down two of my friends," said Sagar Indulkar, a friend of the deceased and an eyewitness.

He also said that Jagdish Kona escaped with minor injuries and Vijanmuri came under the wheels. He told the police that Vijanmuri was dragged for 50 metres and his head hit the divider along with the car. We saw him lying in a pool of blood and raised an alarm after which the car driver tried to flee."

The IO said, Vijammuri is a native of Mangalagiri in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh and was a final year engineering student at Amity University situated in Sector 125. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

"The accused was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. A case under relevant sections has been registered against him and investigations are in progress," said Singh. The body of 20-year-old Vijanmuri has been sent for post-mortem and his parents have been informed about the accident, he said.Vijanmuri is the elder son of his family, his father Ravi Vijanmuri is business man in Andhra Pradesh.

Police said that Jagdish Kona is present under treatment and doctors have said his condition is stable now.
