The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has arrested a gangster and apprehended a juvenile who had opened fire upon the police party and escaped on Thursday while they were intercepted. The police officials said that the accused are a part of the gang which procures illegal weapons.

"The accused has been identified as Devinder alias Monu and a juvenile. The names of other gang members have been withheld as they are yet to be arrested. The gang is involved in illegal supply and purchase of arms. The police recovered seven semi-automatic pistols including those of prohibited bore, 35 live cartridges and a Tata Safari from their possession," said Rajesh Deo, DCP, Crime. The gang was in the process of procuring a large cache of sophisticated weapons in order to impress their rivals and carry out some heinous crime in the Capital.

Around two weeks ago, the gang members had travelled to Baghpat to purchase the weapons. However, the deal was not finalised due to price issues. The gang members continued to negotiate with various illegal arm suppliers and on Wednesday went to Kosi Kalan in Mathura for procuring the weapons. This information was developed and the Crime Branch sleuths trailed them.

The gang's return was planned to Delhi via Faridabad along with the weapons. A trap was laid at the police picket near Delhi-Surajkund border in South-East Delhi. On Thursday around 4:10 pm, the suspected vehicle was located and directed to stop but it went past the barricade and tried to run over the police personnel.

The occupants of the vehicle, five in number, also fired two rounds from inside the vehicle. The police party fired at them which led to the bursting of the rear tyre of the vehicle. Despite the tyre burst they drove the vehicle and moved towards SangamVihar. However, owing to a narrow lane ahead they rammed into a stationary Brezza car after which they abandoned the car and fled. The area which is highly populated gave an easy escape route to the criminals.

During the search of the vehicle abandoned by the accused men, five semi-automatic pistols, nine live cartridges, two fired cartridges were recovered. A case was later registered.
