Birthday celebrations in a family turned tragic when a 32-year-old uncle of the birthday boy was killed by a speeding truck that rammed into his bike in West Delhi's Vikaspuri area late on Thursday night. The man's wife and two kids, a son aged seven, and an eight-month-old daughter, narrowly escaped from coming under the truck.

According to the police, the incident in Vikaspuri took place around 11.45 pm when the deceased, identified as Rajnish Kumar, a resident of Tilak Vihar and an auto driver by occupation, was returning home after his nephew's birthday celebrations, along with his wife Rinkal, 25, and son Ashu, 7, and daughter Anshika on a motorcycle. The accident took place when the family was just less than a kilometre away from their house.

Witnesses and locals told the police that when they reached in front of Vikas Kunj, Kumar was trying to keep his motorcycle on the left side of the road, when a speeding truck rammed into their bike from behind. "The impact of the collision was such that the man came under the rear tyre of the vehicle while his family members who were thrown meters away, sustained critical injuries," said a senior police officer.

A passerby made a police call after which the injured were rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where Kumar was declared dead while the other three were admitted for treatment.

The deceased's elderly father, who is a rickshaw puller, said Kumar's kids are unaware of their father's demise. "My seven-year-old grandson has been asking about his father. We do not know how to tell the kids. The incident has ruined our life," said Ram Sanjeevan, who came to Delhi in 2001 from Unnao, UP.

Police said the truck with the registration number HP 15B 1364 was seized and the errant driver, was identified as Dilawar Singh, a resident of Hoshiarpur, Punjab. He was held at the spot by the mob and handed over to the police who arrested him.

"He was booked under IPC section 304A for causing death due to negligence and rash driving. A case has been registered on the basis of the deceased wife's statement at Vikaspuri police station and the matter is being probed," the officer said.

In another incident, a 30-year-old man was run over by a car after which the driver fled leaving the man dead in Chirag Dilli's Swami Nagar area. The deceased was identified as Imtiyaz. Police are trying to find out about the errant driver and CCTV footages are being checked. The incident came to light when a passerby made a police call.

Analysis

Speeding trucks are the major cause of motor accidents in the Capital and NCR regions especially at night. Often, smaller vehicles such as bikes and auto rickshaws are vulnerable. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that often bribes are paid by truck owners and the drivers are let off.
