L-G visits hosp to check dengue preparedness

The spike in cases of dengue and chikungunya in Delhi have put the authorities on alert. Government hospitals in Delhi have initiated training of medical practitioners, wards have been dedicated for patients and a complete check is being conducted on the overall hygiene of the hospitals.

"This time we are one step ahead. All doctors have been trained on how to deal with patients. The medical staff has also been sensitised. As the cases have begun to come in early, we are taking all preventive measures necessary to deal with this menace," said Dr Punita Mahajan, medical superintendent, Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital.

"This year all the guidelines have been issued early unlike previous years. The hospitals have been told to work on the capacity building of the doctors. All medical staff should be trained to treat patients with dengue and chikungunya," said Dr SM Raheja, additional director general of health services (ADGHS).

As many as 21 deaths due to dengue have been reported at various hospitals, including nine at AIIMS, though the official tally of the SDMC stands at 10. A total of 17 suspected deaths due to malaria have also been reported by the civic bodies. In 2016, 4,431 cases of dengue and 7,760 cases of chikungunya had been reported from the city.

On Saturday, Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal visited GB Pant and Lok Nayak hospital and the Guru Nanak Eye Centre to monitor existing health facilities. The L-G instructed hospitals to have sufficient number of beds in the coming monsoon season.

During the discussion, the medical superintendents of hospitals apprised the L-G about the problems being faced such as shortage of staff, equipment, traffic problems and encroachment of hospital land, particularly in the vicinity of the Guru Nanak Eye Centre. "He (LG) has instructed the concerned authorities to resolve the issues on priority," said a senior health official.
