The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) authorities announced on Monday that they have imposed the new tax regime, Goods and Services Tax (GST), on the renting out of its guesthouses.

The university charges Rs 1,000-5,000 as rent for its three guesthouses — Aravali, Aravali International, and Gomti. According to a circular issued by the university, there will be no GST on renting of guesthouses, campus sites, or other commercial places meant for residential or lodging purposes with less than Rs 1,000 per room per day tariff.

"A GST of 12 per cent will be imposed on tariffs ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 per day, while those between Rs 2,500 and Rs 5,000 will attract 18 per cent GST," Shankar Dhar, Joint Registrar (Finance), stated in the circular.

"The highest GST slab of 28 per cent will be levied when the rents are above Rs 5,000," he added.

Besides, 18 per cent GST will be levied on usage of equipment in Advanced Instrumentation Research Facility, rent on shops and establishments, and use of convention centre, cafeteria, and community centre.
