Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was the 12th busiest airport worldwide for the month of November, 2016, as per the latest report published by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Officials said this was for the first time that an Indian airport entered the league of top 15 airports in the world.

Delhi airport also recorded the highest growth rate of 19.1 per cent in November, 2016, globally. It crossed the 50 million passenger mark during the same period, after it handled a record 55.64 million passengers — highest ever in the country.

Commenting on the achievement, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) CEO Prabhakara Rao said: "We are delighted to emerge as the 12th busiest airport worldwide for the month of November, 2016. This coincides with the period when we also crossed the 50 million mark. DIAL always aims to set new standards from Best 'On-Time Performance' to world-class amenities. We take this occasion to thank all our stakeholders, partners, and passengers, who helped us achieve this distinct glory."

Officials also said that the airport has reached an average of 1,185 air traffic movements a day, which is another record-breaking achievement. "The number of air traffic movements IGI handles every day at average is the highest in the country. We are growing as one of the world's busiest and largest airport at a rapid pace. Our infrastructure and services are being constantly enhanced to match the continuous growth," Rao added.

Delhi airport connects to 127 destinations worldwide. It is the hub for many major airlines, including Air India, Vistara, IndiGo, and SpiceJet.
