For the first time, a police officer of the rank of Special Commissioner, SBK Singh, came out of his office to pacify the agitating students and questioned them.

The students had refused to allow a delegation inside for talks. On being asked why women were being detained and students were beaten up, Singh said: "I don't know who gave the detention orders and even if I knew I won't disclose the name".

In line with one of the demands of the students, the case was transferred from the district police to the Crime Branch. Singh is the Special Commisioner (Law and Order), North. Here is his conversation with the students.

Students: We want the registration of a separate FIR on the attacks on us?

Singh: We are investigating the case and want your cooperation. A separate case cannot be filed on each complaint. An FIR has already been filed at Maurice Nagar police station. I am ready to listen to all of you.

Students: Police officers thrashed us and we have videographic evidence. What action would you take against them?

Singh: We are investigating.

Students: We were carrying out a peaceful protest, yet we were lathi-charged. Who gave the orders for the lathi-charge and detention of students? What action will be taken against the Maurice Nagar police officers?

Singh: I am not aware of who gave the orders. Even if I knew, I won't reveal.

Students: Does the FIR mention that ABVP activists strangulated Prof. Prasanto Chakravarty? The police officers did not do anything and stood hand-in-gloves with ABVP activists. In fact, ABVP members threatened to sexually assault us. What about that?

Singh: We take the statements of several people in cases like this, but file only one FIR. The state has a law and numerous court orders are there. All evidences in connection with assault or alleged strangulation will be noted. Over two dozen persons were injured, including police officers, protesters and media persons.

Students: What is the FIR number and who is the complainant in the case? We request you to open a public desk where all students can come and register their complaints.

Singh: The FIR number is 28/17. About the desk, the point has been taken and will talk it with the Commissioner of Police.

Students: We demand the suspension of the Maurice Nagar SHO as some students were roughed up in their residential accommodations. We also want you to read out the FIR.

Singh: We will probe all allegations. The case will be transferred to the Crime Branch and we will send the order soon. Complaints of injuries and violence are there from both the sides and hence they have been combined in the FIR.

Later in the evening, the case was transferred to DCP (Crime).
