Just days after a Paharganj hotel manager was arrested for making hoax bomb calls, the security forces were thrown into a tizzy on Wednesday when an unidentified caller told the police that there would be a bomb blast at the Rajiv Chowk Metro station.

Sources in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which provides security at the Delhi Metro stations, told DNA that the Delhi Police Control Room received the call around 8.50 am. The caller told the police: "Rajiv Chowk mein bomb blast hoga (There will be a blast at Rajiv Chowk station)". The PCR then immediately informed the Delhi Metro Rail Police, which alerted the CISF control room at Shastri Park, and all other agencies concerned, including the intelligence sleuths.

Amid the peak rush hour, armed commandos and security men, equipped with bomb detection tools and dog squads, rushed to the Rajiv Chowk Metro station and turned it into a fortress. The entire station was thoroughly scanned and sanitised. The Metro operations and passengers' movement, however, continued without disruption.

"PCR vans, dog squads, bomb detection and disposal squads, senior CISF officials, and armed commandos with the Quick Response Teams immediately arrived at the station, which was covered under a multi-layer security ring. The entire area was scanned and thoroughly checked. Following a more than two-and-a-half hour drill, the station was declared clean," a senior CISF officer said.

Following this, security at other Metro stations, including Aerocity, New Delhi, Kashmere Gate, Heritage Line stations, Central Secretariat, and Chandni Chowk was also stepped up significantly and adequate additional deployement was ensured till late in the evening. The police said the caller had also taken names of six other vital installations, where a bomb blast could take place.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police initiated technical surveillance and traced one Vikky, a resident of Begumpur, from whose number the call was made. "When a team rushed to the identified residence, a woman said Vikky was her son but had gone to Jharkhand for some work two days ago. She also said that he does not use any phone," a senior Delhi Police officer said.

The cops now suspect that someone procured a SIM card using Vikky's details and used it to make the hoax call. Further investigation is underway, an officer said.
