The Gautam Buddha Nagar Police arrested the head of Hindu Gau Raksha Dal for forcing meat shops to shut down during Navratri in Greater Noida on Saturday. According to police, the accused, identified as Ved Nagar, along with his associates, forced several meat shops to stay closed at places in Greater Noida in the last one week.

"We received information that Nagar along with some supporters would try to shut down meat shops. We traced the accused to Acheja village and arrested him under Section 151 of the IPC," said Manish Saxena, Noida Police, PRO.

Earlier, the outfit had claimed that it had petitioned the district administration and Badalpur police station last month to stop meat sales during Navratri but decided to go ahead when it received no response. After that, fearing vandalism, many more meat and fish sellers shut their shops voluntarily.

"We will not allow any person to breach the law and order situation," said BN Singh, District Magistrate.

Vigilantism

A video of the Gau Raksha Dal had gone viral on Friday, in which they were instructing dhabas and shops in Greater Noida (W) to remove chicken and mutton dishes from their menu during Navratri or face consequences.
