According to government officials, thousands of families— in Mehrauli, Najafgarh, Kanjhawala, Narela and Alipur villages — who were allotted small plots of Gram Sabha land in the 1970s and early 80s, are now facing hardship.
In a bid to help people below the poverty line, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal requesting for ownership rights to those who have been allotted small plots of Gram Sabha land.
This land was awarded under the Centre's 20-point programme around four decades back.
According to government officials, thousands of families— in Mehrauli, Najafgarh, Kanjhawala, Narela and Alipur villages — who were allotted small plots of Gram Sabha land in the 1970s and early 80s, are now facing hardship.
"The basic objective of these land allocations was to eradicate poverty and to improve the quality of life of the poor and the under-privileged sections of the rural community," the Delhi Chief Minister wrote in the letter.
The Delhi government had already approved the Bhumidhari (ownership) right in 2012, but as the then LG had a difference of opinion on this issue, he had referred the matter to President Pranab Mukherjee.
"Since then, this issue is pending with the President...either LG withdraws this reference from President and grants approval to granting Bhumidari Rights or the LG may use his good offices to get this proposal passed from the Centre and President," Kejriwal had said in the letter.
Kejriwal has also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to resume the subsidy on sugar given to poor families. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, had taken the decision to end subsidised sugar to poor families across the country.
Meanwhile, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the Delhi government was also trying to get ownership rights for the land given to thousands of landless families in Delhi during 1970-1980. These families, including Dalits, people from other backward classes and widows, were given small parcels of Grama Sabha land under a central government programme.
