Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested gangster Manjeet Singh alias Mahal, prime suspect in the case of murder of former MLA Bharat Singh, on Thursday. Mahal has been involved in nearly two dozen cases of extortion, murder, attempt to murder and possession of arms.

A 9mm pistol with 52 live cartridges was recovered from his possession. According to the police, he was arrested while he was trying to procure some weapons to eliminate the rival Krishan Pahalwan gang. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against him.

The Special Cell had deployed its teams in various areas, including Najafgarh, Dwarka, Gurgaon and Chattarpur, to locate the accused. As soon as a team got a tip-off, it acted promptly and arrived at the spot.

Last year on March 29, Mahal and his associates had allegedly gunned down Singh in the presence of scores of people at Abhinandan Garden in Najafgarh, when the ex-MLA was attending a private function. In subsequent firing, Head Constable Ramjeevan, Singh’s Personal Security Officer Daljeet Singh, and residents Sunita and Paras were injured. At the time, police had arrested some of the accused, but Mahal and another prime suspect Hemant had gone absconding.

Mahal was arrested earlier in 2013 in connection with an attempt to murder case. He was, however, released on bail and went into hiding after that. He is one of the most wanted criminals of the Delhi-NCR region, with his crime record going back to as far as 1992.

“He had a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head,” said a senior police officer. A resident of Mitraon Kalan village in south-west Delhi, Mahal first became an active member of the Balraj gang of his native village. After the death of Balraj, he became the head of the gang, which was involved in several heinous crimes.
