The Delhi Police on Sunday registered a case against an Assistant Professor at Delhi University's Dyal Singh College, Kedar Kumar Mandal, for posting an objectionable statement about Goddess Durga on a social networking site on Friday. He has, however, not been arrested till now.

According to the south district police, who had received the complaint regarding the professor on Saturday, the plaint was thoroughly examined before the accused was booked.

"A case under Section 153 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Lodhi Colony police station," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chinmoy Biswal said.

Senior police officers also said that they will write to the authorities at the social media platform Facebook, in order to check the location from where the post was written and later shared in multiple groups. As of now, the case does not mention the sections of the Information Technology Act, but the police are examining whether these sections need to be added as well. In addition, the cops will serve him a notice, directing him to join the investigation.

Mandal had posted the objectionable comment, in which he compared Durga to a prostitute, on his Facebook wall at 6.43 pm on September 22. The post was shared multiple times and nearly 100 people had commented on it before it was removed from his account.

A section of DU teachers then filed a police complaint against Mandal on Saturday. As per the complaint, the post was shared in as many as 21 groups. Demanding strict action against him, members of BJP-backed National Democratic Teachers' Front had said:"An FIR should be registered against the person for using such language for the Goddess and that too during the auspicious festival of Durga Puja."

Mandal remained unavailable for comments, despite repeated attempts.

When queried, Dyal Singh College Principal IG Bakshi said: "The matter has come to our knowledge but we have not received any written complaint against the faculty member, so far. The college will take a decision regarding the matter on Monday."

Meanwhile, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also demanded Mandal's suspension. "We demand suspension of the person who has no respect for the religious sentiments of Hindus and dignity of women," their statement read.
