Thirty-eight-year-old Tarun Gupta's saw dreams of owning a restaurant and had even joined a restaurant management course to learn the trade. His dreams, however, were crushed when he was callously mowed down by a car for objecting to it being parked right outside his Chinese food joint, located in the Begumpur area of Rohini.

The driver of the Alto car, identified as Sanjay Pandey, was traced down by police by his number plate and arrested subsequently on Friday evening.

Manish Gupta, Tarun's brother, can still not get over the nightmarish incident. "He ran over my brother and dragged him for around 100 metres. I see this road everyday and that sight doesn't go out of my mind. He was standing one minute and in the next he was dead," he said.

Narrating the incident, Manish revealed on Wednesday that when he was sitting at the shop — Dragon Chinese Point — a silver-coloured Alto came and parked right outside their shop. A man seated in the car got down and went to the shop on the opposite side of the road to purchase something.

"On his return I asked him to park his car elsewhere, or at the opposite side, so that the entry to our shop was not blocked; but he did not listen and started arguing instead," said Manish, adding that he also made a PCR call.

Hearing the noises, other family members including the father, mother, and children of the deceased arrived at the spot. Tarun was standing on the road and was also asking the accused to park his car elsewhere.

"While leaving, he reversed his car and hit a scooter parked behind it. My son was standing on the road. He then hit him and in an attempt to flee the spot, he hit him yet again and fled," said the father of the deceased. He also alleged that the accused was drunk.

The entire family lives in an apartment just above the shop. Tarun is survived by his wife and two children.

Commenting on the case, Rishi Pal, DCP, Rohini, said, "Pandey was arrested on Friday evening after we traced him through the number plate of the car. He had bought the car with his father's money and is currently unemployed. A case under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered. The car has been seized and forensic examination of it has been done."
