Two days before the alleged security breach on the campus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which snowballed into a major controversy, a similar incident had been reported at Delhi University's SGTB Khalsa College on September 12.

According to an FIR registered by college Principal Jaswinder Singh at the Civil Lines police station, four people in an inebriated condition tried to enter the campus at 1:30 am. They included two students of the college, a caretaker at the college's canteen, and an outsider.

The complaint further stated that when the guard tried to stop them, they beat him up. They, however, fled from the spot as soon as some other guards reached there to control the situation. The incident took place near gate number 3 of the Khalsa College, very close to the Principal's residence.

The College authorities also claimed that the four were trying to barge in to the women's hostel, although the police were yet to confirm this. "The women's hostel is far from the gate where the alleged incident took place." DCP (north) Jatin Narwal said.

"A case has been registered against four persons under Sections 447 (criminal trespass), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The police have arrested the canteen caretaker and investigation is still on. We are yet to ascertain the reason why they were trying to enter the college premises at that time," Narwal added.

While the Principal refused to comment on the matter, residents of the women's hostel, situated a few metres from the incident site, expressed concerned about their security. "What if there was a group of 20-25 drunken people instead of four? There was only one security guard and he, too, was unarmed. This is sheer security breach," said a third-year BCom (H) student, who lives in the hostel.
