In a gruesome crime, a drug addicted son killed his own mother for money. Animesh Jha, 32, who had completed his graduation in computer engineering, banged his mother's head remorselessly against the wall in the early hours of the morning on February 24 when she refused to give him money to buy drugs. In a manhunt, police arrested him from Patna late on Tuesday night. Officials say that he was planning to flee to Nepal.

The crime was all the more shocking because Jha seemed to have everything going for him moneywise. Police officials said that Animesh had completed his graduation in Computer Engineering from a Malaysian university and he was working at Norton India, a security software firm. However, the lure of drugs proved too strong and even hindered his bid to escape

"Four days before the murder he was released by the Nepal Police who had arrested him in a drugs case," said Surender Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, south-west.

Police officials say that Animesh had woken up his mother, Meeta Jha, 53, at 3:30 am on February 24 and asked her for money to buy drugs. Jha was an investor in share markets. "He told his mother he would die without drugs and urgently needed money but when she refused he banged her head repeatedly against the wall and then strangled her with a rope," said a senior police officer.

Police said they feel the accused had planned the crime in advance, as Jha was seen carrying a rope, and entering his house three hours before the murder. The mother was strangulated with the same rope.

"We were informed about the murder four days later by the accused's sister. She informed the police that neither the mother and nor her brother was answering the phone and knowing the strained relationship between the two she suspected something was wrong. The police team reached the location and discovered the body of Meeta," Kumar said.

As per CCTV cameras installed in the areas and at his residence Jha was seen leaving his residence around 6:30 am on the day of the incident. He then went to the Mahavir Enclave market and withdrew Rs 10,000 from an ATM and immediately left for the Kashmere Gate bus stand. To evade arrest he changed his location several times in the last three weeks.

"He first went to Rishikesh, then Haridwar, then Mumbai where he created an account on Linkedin to contact his friends and avoid technical surveillance. The police there had traced his location to Mumbai but before they could reach he changed his location from Chembur (Mumbai) to Andheri (Mumbai) and from there he fled to Patna," Kumar added.

Officials said that Jha was trying to contact one of his friends through Linkedin and wanted to escape to Patna and from there by road to Nepal as he had drug peddlers as his contacts there. He was arrested late night on Tuesday from the Patna Railway station where he was trying to contact people through the job based application. Jha's father was a senior manager at TISCO and passed away in 2013 due to health issues and his sister is a doctor based in the UK.
