Life for 37-year-old Abdullah Marwan changed four months ago when he got caught in an exchange of fire in Yemen, leaving him with a deep wound on his right arm. Apart from the unbearable physical pain, what troubled him more was the mental pressure of not being able to perform basic tasks.

"I had sustained an open fracture of the right humerus with significant bone loss, nerve injury and a massive wound over the right arm. Because of the injury to the nerves, it was difficult to lift my wrist or move my fingers. Most of the time, I felt handicapped and my confidence had really gone down," said Abdullah.

Doctors in Yemen were unable to completely treat him and for nearly four months, the wounds were only managed through wound debridement (wound cleaning) and regular dressings.

After many such repeated unsuccessful treatments, Abdullah and his family researched about getting the right treatment and then came to India. After a thorough examination, doctors in Delhi diagnosed a severely comminuted fracture, also commonly known as multiple bone splinters of the right humerus with massive bone loss due to the firearm pellets.

"He came to us with a severely disabled arm. His right arm was immobile and it was difficult for him to even perform basic daily tasks. It didn't help much that the wound was four months old, and had not received adequate medical treatment in the past," said Dr Ramneek Mahajan, Director of Orthopaedics & Head – Joint reconstruction (Hip & Knee) Unit, Max Smart Super Speciality hospital, Saket.

Abdullah was discharged with a renewed confidence in being able to carry out his daily routines.
