Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni and his Jharkhand cricket team members were rescued after a major fire broke out at a high-end hotel in southwest Delhi's Dwarka area during the early hours of Friday. The fire was controlled with the help of 30 fire tenders, after all 540 occupants of the hotel were rescued by fire officials and hotel staff. No casualties were reported, officials said.

According to fire officials, the fire broke out in the server room on the ground floor of Hotel Welcome, in Pinnacle Mall, Dwarka sector 10. It was around 6.30 am that a hotel staff member noticed heavy smoke emanating from the server room and alerted other senior staff, police, and the fire department.

"As soon as we received the information that more than 500 guests were present in the hotel, 30 fire tenders were rushed to the hotel and all the 540 occupants including foreigners, had to be rushed out. Skylifts to rescue people on higher floors were also called in. Most of the occupants had already left the hotel with the assistance of the hotel staff. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his Jharkhand cricket team members staying in the hotel also had to rush out," said Atul Garg, chief fire officer, Delhi Fire Services.

The scare, however, turned out to be a welcome opportunity for the hotel guests, who used it to meet the cricketer and get clicked with him.

The hotel was shut after the fire till the cooling process was finished. It was then opened for use after the fire officials declared it safe. Senior police officers said that they are probing the sabotage angle, however, prima facie it appears that the fire was caused due to a short-circuit in the server room.

The cricketers were in Delhi to play for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. A semi-final match was scheduled for Friday, which was postponed following the fire incident.
