The buses in the national Capital may soon come in many different sizes. In a bid to better public transport and decongest the city roads, the Delhi government is planning to come up with medium-sized and mini buses to cater to the diverse need of different routes.

The move has been thought over in view of the recommendations of a 2012 report prepared by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), which suggested running of different sized buses to augment public transport in the Capital.

“As per the DIMTS report on route rationlisation, there is a need to run different sized buses to have a robust public transport system,” a Delhi government official said.

It has been hard on Delhi commuters to carry on with a shortage of around 16,000 buses. At present, there are around 5,800 buses, including 4,200 DTC and 1,600 of cluster plying across the city.

Delhi Transport Minister Satyendar Jain has briefed Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia about the plan.

According to a senior official, bus manufacturers have also assured the government that mini and midi buses could be provided sooner in comparison to normal buses.

“These buses could ply on narrow, inside roads of the Capital while the existing low-floor buses occupying bigger space can remain on the wider roads,” he said.
