The Delhi Police kicked off its Road Safety Week on Monday with a street play by schoolchildren, who performed at the historic Rajpath.

The seven-day campaign is expected to make citizens, in particular minors, aware of traffic rules. By using interactive means of paintings, plays, and workshops, the traffic cops are trying to reach out to people to make them respect traffic laws.

Each day of the campaign will be dedicated to highlighting particular causes resulting in road accidents.

“This time, we are focusing on the youth, as the cases of minors being involved in road accidents are increasing. We want children to be educated about road safety so that they become responsible drivers in future, ” said Ajai Kashyap, Special CP (Traffic).

The campaign comes in the backdrop of a recent incident where a 45-year-old woman was critically injured after being hit by a vehicle being driven by a 16-year-old in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka area.

“We cannot force kids to follow rules. We can only motivate them to do so. Through this campaign, we are also trying to reach out to parents, urging them to not allow their kids the luxury of a vehicle till they become adults,” a senior officer said.

Various competitions will be organised during the campaign, including nukkad nataks and awareness drives, such as helmet distribution for two-wheeler riders.
