Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the Delhi Police on Friday for its sincere efforts in delivering their duties, calling it “the force for the nation”. Singh was speaking on the occasion of the 71st Raising Day of the Delhi Police at the Kingsway Camp.

While addressing the officers, Singh said,  “Given the fact that it is seen as a police force for the entire country, people have lot of expectation from the force. This requires them to put extra effort and they need to be extra alert and cautious.”

Singh urged the force to create a safe and secure environment so that the residents feel a sense of safety in the national capital. Singh appreciated the police force for their multiple achievements such as the arrest of the Indian Mujahideen operative Ariz Khan who had been absconding for over a decade. He also praised the impenetrable security during the ASEAN SUMMIT 2017, emphasizing that the Delhi police was capable of handling crucial challenges.

He announced a fund of Rs 5 crore to be given to the Delhi Police’s Martyr Fund. “Crime and criminal tracking network and systems is an infrastructure created by the government to combat crime. It is a centralised database of crime and criminals. When operationalised it will bring a major paradigm shift in security system of the country,” added the Home Minister.

Singh also presented medals to Delhi Police officers. Station House Officer (SHO) of Punjabi Bagh won the best police station trophy.

Rajnath Singh also sang praises on the Delhi police’s   efficient handling of the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed ‘Padmavaat’ despite violent threats from the Rajput Karni Sena. Singh said that there was “lot of chaos” during the release and “something untoward” was expected to happen but the Delhi police contained it.

Speaking at the event, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik focussed on the decline in the crime rate and stated that the force had overcome all the challenges faced by them.
