In a shocking lapse of security at Delhi airport, five passengers who were supposed to board a Flydubai plane scheduled to depart at 4am for Dubai, were able to move from the departure lounge into the arrival area lounge with ease.

“There was an incident on FZ-432 flight on October 5. While the boarding of the flight was in progress from boarding gate 8, the arrival door got opened and few of the passengers who boarded from departure side exited from the arrival gate. This could have been a major security breach had it gone unnoticed,” said a senior airport security official.

The five passengers got their passports stamped by immigration officials showing their exit from the country. However, they managed to lose their way and were able to head to the arrivals lounge, where another set of immigration officials stamped the passport of one of the passengers allowing him entry back into Delhi.

Looking at CCTV reports after the incident, airport security officials said while four of the passengers were located in the transit lounge, while the fifth one was missing. “This passenger went to arrivals, cleared his immigration and came out of the airport like any other arrival passenger. He then managed to enter the airport departures again and was located wandering around lost in the departure check-in area later by the GHA (Ground Handling Agency),” the official told DNA.

“According to his passport, he got departure stamp, left Delhi airport for Dubai and in just few minutes he came back from Dubai as he was having arrival stamp on his passport too,” he said.

According to security officials, the arrival gate can’t be opened when the boarding gate for departure is open and boarding for a flight is on. This is because these gates have an interlock mechanism which prohibits both of them opening at the same time.

It has yet to be identified that how the gates failed and why no one stopped the passengers from walking through the wrong gate.

Airline security officials have expressed their alarm at the incident. “This is of great concern especially when the airport is on high alert,” said a senior airline security official. He added, “Automatic gates cannot be opened manually. Only the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) and airline officials etc can open it.”
