In a resident-friendly move, the transport department of the Delhi government will now accept debit cards for all online transactions pertaining to its services. Taking another step towards complete automation and digitisation, four motor licensing offices (MLO) will also become completely online.

According to transport commissioner Varsha Joshi, the process of registration certificate (RC) will be completely online from March 7. "Delighted to inform everyone that debit cards will now be accepted for all online transactions in Transport Deptt offices, thanks to our persistent efforts in coordinating with Finance Deptt/ RBI/ SBI to make online happen in the true sense (sic)," she tweeted.

The four MLO offices at Janakpuri, Vasant Vihar, Mall Road and IP Estate will be fully online from March 7, she said.

All applications and fees will be received online and further intimations, too, will be sent through SMSes. After Janakpuri and Vasant Vihar offices that were completely online, the same has now been extended to the offices in Mall Road and IP Estate.

Transfer of RC too will be done online across all zonal offices of the department. "Applicants will only be called personally if there is any discrepancy in signatures, she said.

By including the transfer of RC in online services, almost all the services of the transport department are now digitised. The delay in digitising was because it required the physical transfer of the card. With it becoming online, applicants now have the option of sending it by post.

"Introducing automation and online services is a continuous process and it is our endeavour to make everything automated, online and transparent in the near future," Joshi added.

Residents, meanwhile, have welcomed the step saying that it will save them from the harassment of standing in long queues. "Renewal of licenses, transferring RCs are some of the services a lot of people dread getting done because there are long queues and takes a lot of time. I am hopeful that digitisation will make the process less cumbersome," said Rajneesh Bhatia, a resident of Mayur Vihar.
