Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist Harpreet Singh, who had won accolades in 2004 in discus throw at the games in Australia, was arrested on Friday, along with two others, for possessing 26 kg of street drug Mephedrone, commonly known as Meow-Meow. The seized drug is estimated to be worth nearly Rs 50 crore in the international market, reportedly making it the biggest seizure by the Special Cell.

Sources said the kingpins of the drug syndicate have their base in London and UAE, and are under the police scanner. "The three arrested have been identified as Amandeep Singh, 29, Harpreet Singh, 30, and Harnish Sarpal, 36. Amandeep and Harpreet have been friends for long as they lived in the same area. Investigation has revealed that the kingpins, identified as Kailash Rajput and Kishan, are currently based in Dubai and the United Kingdom (UK), respectively. They have a chain of people in India running the show for them. The drug seems to come from the African sub-continent and reaches Mumbai via waterways," DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said.

He further said that after the consignment arrives in Mumbai, the kingpins coordinate with their agents in the city as well as the national Capital to send it to other areas such as Pune and Punjab and countries such as Malaysia, middle-East, and the US. The three arrestees were the Delhi-Mumbai agents, Yadav said.

The cops received a tip off that Amandeep and Harpreet would be returning from Mumbai with a consignment. The duo was picked up from the New Delhi railway station while they were on a Dadar-Amritsar train. Based on the information given by them, Hanish was also arrested later.

Gifted and dedicated, Harpreet was the All-India Inter University Champion for three consecutive years, 2006-2008. In 2006, he won a bronze medal at the South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka.

In 2007, however, the Sports Authority of India banned him for six months after he tested positive for doping. The ban was just the starting of his downward spiral. A resident of west Delhi's Hari Nagar area, he tried his hand at the real estate business but did not succeed. Then he took to drug peddling.

At the same time, Amandeep had gone to the UK for a diploma course. During his two years there, he came in touch with Kishan and Hanish, and they started consuming drugs together. In 2012, Hanish and Amandeep returned to India but failed to get a job. They were in awe of Kishan's lavish lifestyle, and asked him to involve them in his business.

After four successful deals together, the duo started pretending to be business tycoons.
