Young artisans across all fields of art will be awarded the Kamaladevi Puraskar (KDP) for their talent in a function to be held at India International Centre on Saturday. Given annually by Delhi Crafts Council (DCC), KDP is an annual scholarship award given to encourage young talent among artists in the age 14-20 years, so they continue to practice their craft and are motivated to take it up as a means of livelihood eventually.

The award was instituted in 1986 in the name of its patron founder Kamala Deviji, who also presented the first Puraskar. The awards will also mark the Golden Jubilee year of DCC, hence the focus will be on crafts that support the performing arts. Since the inception of the award more than three decades ago, over 150 children have benefited from the scholarships. Some of the awardees have also been honoured as Master Craftsmen, an award bestowed on them by the Government of India.

Five young artisans, who have been selected for the Kamaladevi Puraskar this year, represent the art of leather puppet making for the Ravan Chhayashadow puppet theatre of Odisha, mask making for SeraikelaChhau of Jharkhand, Potloi (dress) making for the RaasLeela of Manipur, Phad painting for the storytelling tradition of Rajasthan, and making of the Manipuripungdrum.

"Theatre craft was an area of particular interest to Late Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and the DCC would like to pay tribute to her while celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. Short cultural performances of the related crafts will also be presented by talented groups that have traveled especially for this event," a representative of DCC said.

Shekhar Sen, chairperson, Sangeet Natak Academy will be the chief guest and Guru Singhajit Singh will be the guest of honour at the event.
