From high-end cars to branded clothes, there was nothing that they couldn't lay their hands on. When four unemployed youths suddenly started living a life that imitated a movie, it drew everyone's attention, and finally landed them in the cops' net. The police were surprised to find that Vikas Jha alias Jeetu, 25, Gopal alias Ganja, 28, Jameel alias Raees, 26, and Asif, 28, had managed to rob over 300 people to the tune of crores.

DCP (south-west) Surender Kumar said, "The accused revealed that they targetted the elderly, less educated persons, women, and children who visited ATMs. On the pretext of helping them withdraw the money, they would swap their ATM cards with another of the same bank. They would then see the ATM pin used by the targets and later withdraw money from their cards. They committed over 300 such frauds in various parts of Delhi in the last one year, and amassed nearly a crore."

According to south-west Delhi police, mastermind Jeetu disclosed that of the Rs 35 lakh he made by cheating people, he had set up a garment manufacturing unit in Kapashera. Similarly, Raees also made about Rs 30 lakh and started his own garment factory, while Ganja opened a shop for sale and purchase of used cars in Chhawla from the booty.

After several incidents of cheating by this method were reported, a special team of Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) was asked to probe the matter, Kumar said.

"Police staff in plain clothes were deployed around ATMs where such cases were repeatedly reported. A tip-off was received that two suspects might arrive at two ATMs in Sewak Park and Dwarka Mor areas. A team led by Inspector Raj Kumar identified the accused and they were nabbed. A stolen motorcycle was also recovered from them. They were identified as Jeetu and Asif. Followed their interrogation and several raids, Ganja and Raees were also nabbed," Kumar added.
