After DNA's exclusive report regarding a major security breach at the Palam Air Force base near the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has asked the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to step up surveillance in the area. The move comes after the CISF and other agencies, including Air Force Police, Delhi Police, Bureau of Civil Aviation and officials from intelligence agencies held a security review meeting.
DNA was the first to report that on April 13, a man gave a slip to multiple security covers and sneaked inside the restricted area of the airbase, triggering panic among the security personnel. He was later arrested. Hours of combing and sanitising of the airbase followed the incident that reminded many of the Pathankot attacks. The Delhi Police, Air Force Police and intelligence sleuths later interrogated the man but did not find anything suspicious.
Following the incident, CISF wrote to DIAL to increase surveillance in the area by installing additional CCTV cameras and taking other measures possible.
"Palam airbase is a den of crucial assets for the Indian Air Force. A request to install more cameras to strengthen surveillance has been forwarded but DIAL would require a No-Objection Certificate from the Air Force to make any changes or upgrade security at the airbase," an officer said.
Meanwhile recently, the CISF stepped up surveillance at both domestic as well as international terminals of IGIA. Officers said all the cameras were reserviced, refocused, and repositioned, while additional cameras were installed to ensure a hawk-eye vigil. Following a recent hijack alert, the Delhi Police's Anti-Terror Squad and CISF's armed commandos have also been deployed at the airport's approach roads and inside terminals, sources said.
