If a group of suspicious looking women surround you in a Delhi Metro station seeking help, call the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as they may probably be trying to pick your pocket.

Senior CISF officials reveal the modus operandi. “They (the gang of women) split into groups of 8-10 after entering the station. They then target people carrying valuables and enter a crowded metro train with the target. Some of them would surround him/her, while others would either engage the target seeking some help or start an argument with them. Meanwhile the other members committed theft taking advantage of the crowd. All of them would deboard the train at the next stations, in group of 2-3,” the CISF officer said.

Officer also revealed that 329 women and 42 male pickpockets have been apprehended from January to May this year.

Giving the rising number of cases of thefts and pickpocketing in the Delhi Metro, stringent measures are being by the CISF   taken to ensure such practices are curbed. As a result, more CCTVs cameras have been put up in various stations to scan and identify potential culprits. They, said officers, have yielded results

“On close scrutiny of CCTV footage, the identity of pickpocketers was disclosed and a suspicious group was spotted at Subhash Nagar metro station on June 2. It was noticed that the same group entered the metro station with 21 suspicious ladies and was again spotted at another station on June 3, the next day. Then 15 of them were again noticed the next day on June 4 and were apprehended by the Anti Theft Squad of the CISF, without any delay,” said a senior CISF officer.

The officer added that jewellery and cash worth Rs 11,000 was recovered from the gang. “All of them were handed over to Delhi Metro Rail Police for further investigation,” he added.
