In an attempt to woo regular commuters in the city ahead of the municipal polls, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a campaign titled 'Commuter Contact'. The project will be handled by the party's youth wing, Yuva Morcha.

Under the initiative, young party workers will address people at Metro stations, major traffic intersections, and bus terminals. The workers started the campaign from Rajiv Chowk Metro station in Connaught Place and the plan is to cover as many as 100 Metro stations in the city. The campaign will go on till April 20.

Senior leaders, including Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari, Ashish Sood, and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Vijender Gupta, too, participated in the campaign. They asked people about their daily problems, while asking for their support in the upcoming polls.

"The initiative is aimed at reaching the voters directly for an interaction. Unlike a rally or a jansabha, this informal interaction allows people to talk about issues freely and spontaneously," Gupta said. "Also, since not everybody is interested in attending rallies or is available during that time, we want to address as many people as possible through this campaign," he added.

Meanwhile, the workers took note of locality-specific issues that people mentioned. They also distributed pamphlets listing the good work done by them in the three corporations, including the new waste to energy plant opened in Narela.

Anita Sharma, a commuter, said toilets were her major concern. "Septic tanks of Community Toilet Complexes (CTC) fill up frequently, leading to regular breakdowns. In addition, water pumps are damaged, leading to irregular availability of water. Because of all these problems, toilets remain shut most of the time. The women in this area have to use toilets early in the morning to avoid the morning rush of men and children," she said.

The party leaders targeted the AAP and Congress as well, accusing both the parties of rampant corruption. The BJP win in the Rajouri Garden Assembly bypolls reflected the mood of the city, Tiwari said.

"We won the Rajouri bypoll by a thumping majority. This is reflective of who the people want in power. AAP lost its deposit and will do so again in the upcoming polls," he said, while addressing a group of commuters.
