Ishaq Ahmed, the driver who has been blamed for the January 28 Audi hit-and-run incident that killed four people in Ghaziabad, has now claimed that Syed Imtiyaz Qadri impersonated him and surrendered in a court using his identity after a Bareilly-based lawyer promised him Rs 8,000.

The Audi Q7 had rammed into an auto. Its owner Dr Manish Rawat, a neurosurgeon, had worked in Bareilly before moving to Delhi's Safdarjung hospital nearly six months ago. He has claimed that he was in the car at the time of the accident but Ahmed was actually driving the vehicle.

Speaking to DNA, Ahmed said a media person called him around 6pm on January 31 and started questioning him regarding the accident in Ghaziabad. "Then I got to know that someone posing as me had appeared before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Ghaziabad on January 31 and given a statement that he was driving the car. He also submitted a copy of my driving license as part of the judicial formality," he alleged.

Ahmed further said that Qadri lived in the same building as him in a village in Uttar Pradesh near Bareilly and had taken his license a month ago to issue a SIM card in his name. "I immediately called up Qadri and he told me that he was offered Rs 8,000 by a lawyer in Bareilly to appear in a Ghaziabad court. Qadri is at fault and I'll file a case against him for misusing my identity,"he added.

Ahmed, however, didn't know the name of the lawyer. He also said that he did not know Dr Rawat. On Monday, Rawat, an Associate Professor (Neurology) at the Safdarjung hospital, had claimed that he knew Ahmed for the last one-and-a-half years and that he was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. "He was my driver in Bareilly as well. He was responsible for the accident and surrendered in the court himself. Whether he is the right Ahmed or not is none of my concern as the investigation will reveal the facts. I was not hiding. I was in such mental trauma that I couldn't approach the cops,"Dr Rawat had said.

Dr Rawat's mobile phone remained switched off on Tuesday.

With new revelations, the role of the police has come under the scanner as they did not cross-check Ahmed's credentials before forwarding the report to the court. The cops have now decided to take fingerprints and gather electronic and forensic evidence related to the matter. Meanwhile, Qadri and the two men who signed on Ahmed's bail papers as witnesses are still absconding.
