Despite becoming a growing concern in India, lack of awareness continue to surround Multiple Sclerosis (MS) — a disease that primarily affects the neural system i.e. brain and spinal cord. On May 31, The World Multiple Sclerosis day, AIIMS organised a public awareness lecture and how to lead a life with MS.

Dr (Prof) Kameshwar Prasad (HOD, Department of Neurology), Dr (Prof) MV Padma Srivastava, Dr (Prof) Rohit Bhatia and a few other experts on the matter shared the problems that can arise from living with MS and how to deal with them.

"Patients of younger age with active disease and low disability fare better than others," said Doctor Prasad. "Affordability is a major concern for the patients in India. AIIMS has conducted meta-analysis which suggests that Azathioprine (Rs 10,000 per year) is effective as compared to Interferons (Rs 3 lakh per year). This will serve as a big relief for those who cannot afford more expensive treatment options," he added.

In Multiple Sclerosis, the cells in the nervous system lose their ability to communicate, the reasons for which are unknown, leading to serious problems related to physical and mental health. It can even cause urinary problems and mental disorders.

Doctors say that damaged cells lead to MS and to treat it, stem cells need to be used. Doctors say that they increase the use of stem cells in the blood through injections. They then collect these extra cells and keep them safe.

The doctors then kill all the self-reactive cells and re-inject the stem cells that they collected to regenerate in the body. Through this process, all the 'bad' cells get removed. This process is key in treating patients with MS.
