Doctors living in the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) now have a reason to smile. The 50-year-old residential colonies are all set for a makeover with the existing low rise houses to be converted to high rise buildings. A meeting for the same will be held on May 15.

According to officials, the number of doctors and paramedical staff is expected to double in the next seven to 10 years. The hospital has at present has around 10,000 staff—4,500 doctors, 5,500 nurses and technicians.

"Soon, it will be difficult to accommodate the staff in the existing residential houses. Therefore, we have planned to modernise the entire complex. Also, the condition of the existing houses have become dilapidated and it is difficult for the staff to live there," a senior official from AIIMS said.

The Union cabinet in October last year had approved redevelopment of residential colonies at West Ansari Nagar and Ayur Vigyan Nagar campuses of the medical institute. According to sources, the satisfaction level of the residential capacity in the campus is just 17 per cent.

"In pursuance of the aim to prepare for the futuristic needs and to improve the present day qualitative issues of house, it is perceived to redevelop the existing residential campuses by replacing the existing low rise houses with high rise blocks," a letter by the medical institute said. The letter has been sent to all faculty members, nursing staff, non-faculty members and the nursing association.

The country's premier medical institute has been facing an acute shortage of staff accommodation for more than a decade and currently just about 4 per cent of the staff entitled for accommodation gets to live on campus. The shortage of residential accommodation can be gauged by the fact that 20 professor flats are available on campus as opposed to the faculty strength of close to 700.

Around 25 per cent faculty members are expected to find accommodation within the hospital.
