Every day a person dies in Delhi. This shocking statistic was unveiled in data shared by the Delhi police which showed that so far 383 persons have died in the Capital from January till September. Police officials maintain that though the figure looks alarming, crime has gone down from 2016 when a total of 528 murders were reported.

Most often than not murders take place due to property disputes, personal enmity, intimate relationships or monetary disputes. This comes in light of the recent spate of murders that have taken place in the city. Less than three weeks before the murder of four women and a security guard in Shahadra on Saturday, a man had beaten to death a woman, the mother of three, for allegedly refusing the man's sexual advances. Her body was then burnt and dumped near a landfill site, where the police recovered it.

In August, a 40-year-old man was shot dead and his sister stabbed in a clash between two groups in southeast Delhi's Madangir. While some family members of the deceased alleged that the other group passed lewd remarks at his sister which triggered the clash, police denied the same.

In June, a woman and her paramour planned and executed the murder of her husband and mother-in-law when they started to suspect her relationship with him.

According to the data, the highest number of murders takes place due to personal enmity, which is 22.83 per cent.

The police, however, said that the crime rate has seen a decline compared to 2016.

"There has been a decline in cases of heinous crimes such as dacoity, snatching, robbery, murder, rioting, etc by as much as 26 per cent including crimes against women.

There is also an increase in arrests by 23 per cent and in the detection rate by 7.85 per cent compared to 2016," said a senior Delhi Police officer.
