When his father insisted on going to the hospital to take medicines for his nine-year-old grandson, Manoj Kumar felt happy to see the love between grandfather and grandson. However, little did Kumar know that the visit to the hospital would be the last time he would see his father alive. Manoj’s father passed away while he was standing in the queue to purchase medicines for his son at Delhi government’s Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital.

Harkesh Chand, 72, reached the hospital early, at 7 am, to avoid any rush at the counter. But in an hour, the queue to the medicine counter increased and the situation turned violent. Soon, the patients got aggressive and he fell down in the stampede.

“He was lying down on the floor for a long time but no one came forward to help. Three women who were standing ahead of him tried to rouse him but he did not respond. He couldn’t get up and we lost him at that time,” said Manoj.

A resident of Ashok Nagar, Chand was worried about his grandson Nishant’s health. Nishant was admitted in the hospital after he had suffered minor injuries on Holi. “He was discharged from the hospital on Friday and doctors had prescribed a few medicines which my father had gone to purchase. We didn’t know that he would never come back,” a grief-stricken Manoj said.

This is not a one-off case. The situation is the same in all the government hospitals in the Capital. A large number of patients from all parts of the country line up outside these hospitals to avail of treatment.

The family also alleged that the guards in the hospital did not help the women to take his father to the emergency ward. “They were reluctant to help the women. We have also complained to the administration and reported the matter to the police,” said Manoj.
