A 22-year-old woman was dragged out of a car and raped in front of her husband and brother-in-law in Tigra village area of Haryana on Sunday night. Five accused have been arrested over the past two days, police said.

The main accused Sanjeet, along with the 3 other co-accused Dharmender, Pawan and Deshveer were arrested on Monday. On their instance, the fifth co-accused Pawan Sharma was also arrested on Tuesday.

According to the police, the incident took place when the woman, who belongs to West Bengal and lives with her family in Gurugram, was returning from a function with her husband and brother-in-law, in a car. While narrating the horror, they said it was when they stopped near the Business Park Tower in Sector 56, for the woman's husband to relieve himself, that two cars stopped by their vehicle and four men stepped out to approach the family while one stayed in the car.

"Victims said that the men seemed heavily drunk. They came out and asked why the trio had stopped there and started hurling abuses. When they spotted the woman on the rear seat, one of the men pulled her out and started to drag her to a nearby secluded area. When the woman's husband and brother-in-law tried to save the woman, the accused men thrashed them brutally. The woman was then raped," a senior police officer said.

The four men fled from the spot, warning the three of dire consequences if they lodged a complaint. Police said that the woman's husband, however, remembered the registration number of the accused's car and immediately called up the police.

Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, Sandeep Khirwar told DNA that a case was registered at the sector 56 police station under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

"Surveillance was started without delay to zero down on the identified car and an alert was raised. It was following few tip-offs and local intelligence that the police managed to trace the accused," the commissioner said.
