A youth was killed and four of his friends were injured when their car rammed into a tree on the GT Karnal Road in outer Delhi on Tuesday morning. All of them are students of various colleges and were driving from Narela towards Delhi University (DU), police said.

The accident took place around 10 am. The deceased was identified as Hemant, 22, who was sitting on the front seat. His friend Nishchay, 19, was driving the Alto and was critically injured. Naman, Nakul, and Kajal, who were in the back, also sustained injuries but were stated to be out of danger.

"According to witnesses, Nishchay was speeding and could not control the vehicle when the car came dangerously close to another vehicle in front. In an attempt to avoid collision, he turned the car to one side and rammed into a tree on the road side," a senior officer said.

Passersby and locals then called up the Police Control Room and the injured were rushed to Harish Chandra Hospital, where Hemant was declared dead on arrival. Nishchay sustained critical injuries and was referred to the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh. Others, who sustained minor injuries, were sent to a hospital in Dwarka and their families were informed.

Police said the primary investigation does not indicate that the youth were drunk, but they are waiting for medical reports to confirm.

"Hemant's body has been sent for post-mortem. Initial probe has revealed that all of them were going towards DU. CCTV footage from the area is being checked to see if any other vehicle was involved in the accident. A case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 304 has been registered and the matter is being probed. The damaged vehicle has been seized for inspection," the officer added.
