A joyride for five students, including three women, from different universities, had a tragic end when their speeding car rammed into the divider leaving two men dead, during the early hours on Sunday in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar. The three women were also injured. Police said drunk driving led to the accident.

According to the police, it was around 2:45 am, when the five were returning after a ride in an i20 car that the accident took place. The two deceased have been identified as Sidhartha (20), a resident of Pitam Pura and student of Maharaja Surajmal Shiksha Sansthan in Janak Puri, and Ritesh Dahiya (21) from Sonipat in Haryana, a BSc 2nd year student at Delhi University's Venkateshwara College. The injured have been identified as Diksha Dadu, a resident of Delhi, Joshita Mohanty from Mumbai and Rashi Sharma from Meerut, all 1st year LLB students at Amity University, Noida.

Witnesses and locals told the police that as soon as the car reached the t-point at Hudson lane in Mukherjee Nagar, the driver of the speeding vehicle lost control and it crashed into a divider. The speed of the vehicle was such that it overturned and tumbled down the road for a few meters.

DCP northwest, Aslam Khan said that both the boys died as a result of the accident. "The three girls also sustained injuries. The vehicle was being driven by one, Diksha Dadu at the time of the accident. Her medical examination reveals that she was under the influence of alcohol while driving the vehicle," Khan said.

Dadu and Sharma were sitting in the front seats. When the locals reported the matter, the bodies were so badly tangled in the vehicle that the body of the car had to be cut to pull the injured out. Police said while Sidhartha and Dahiya died on the spot, Sharma has sustained a fracture in her collarbone. She is yet to be discharged from the hospital while Dadu and Mohanty managed to escape with minor injuries. They were also admitted for treatment and are yet to overcome the trauma. Dadu, who was driving, will be arrested once discharged.

The DCP said that a case has been registered for rash and negligent driving and for causing death due to negligence under IPC sections, at Mukherjee Nagar police station.
