Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey believes that Virat Kohli is very similar to Ricky Ponting in his approach as a captain. Hussey also heaped great praise on Kohli and said he had always enjoyed his captaincy.

Hussey who played for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League is back in the city for a commentary stint in the TNPL. "Mr. Cricket" discussed several topics in an interview with Cricbuzz, including his view on Mahendra Singh Dhoni's future and why this is a fantastic chance for Australia to win a series in India.

Talking about the similarities between Kohli and Ponting, both of who are known for their aggressive-styled leadership, Hussey said, "I have always enjoyed Kohli's captaincy. He has got this great will to win and I can see parallels of Ricky Ponting's captaincy in Kohli. Ponting was always hungry for success and would keep pushing his team."

Hussey also compared Kohli captaincy styles with Dhoni, saying it's good that the former doesn't follow the latter's methods.

"MS Dhoni was a wonderful captain and it was always going to be a challenge for Kohli to fill Dhoni's big shoes. But the good thing about Virat is he didn't want to follow Dhoni's methods. He has been his own man and led the side in his own way. He has been true to his own personality. India have been through the period of transition," Hussey said.

"But now, the team is a settled unit. These are exciting times for Indian cricket. The players believe in their captain and everyone has the same approach. Obviously, there will be challenges along the way and not only the captain but the players will also be tested," he added.

India is yet to lose a Test series under Virat Kohli’s captaincy since he led the team against Sri Lanka in 2015 which was his first full series as captain. India had won that series 2-1 which was their first Test series win in Sri Lanka after 22 years. After that, the Kohli-led side had defeated South Africa 3-0 before the mammoth 2016-17 season where they defeated West Indies (2-0), New Zealand (3-0), England (4-0), Bangladesh (1-0) and Australia (2-1). The winning streak continued in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka too as the world number one Test team wrapped up the three-match series by winning the second Test last week.

Hussey also said that this will be a great chance for Australia to win a series in India. He said that the current Australian players have had great exposure to Indian conditions through IPL and played well in the last Test series in India. So this will be a great chance to create an upset.

Hussey also said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni deserves the chance to retire on his own terms.

"MS deserves to go out on his own terms. If he believes he can play the next World Cup, who is to doubt him? He is a very modest and honest man. If he thinks he cannot contribute to India's cause in the World Cup, I don't think he will be there," said Hussey.
