Between indoor classes and weapons training, and the doctrine of counter-terrorism of two countries, the armies of India and UK got into a competition of another kind, when they picked up the bat and ball, and took to the ground, to play their favourite sport, a cricket match of 20 overs in the desert of Mahajan Ranges.

It was Lagaan revisited all over again as the Indian troops won against the UK troops at a friendly 20-20 cricket match played between them. The match was played on the third day of the Indo-UK joint exercise Ajeya Warrior 2017 at Mahajan Range.

The Royal Anglian Battalion won the toss and elected to bat. The Indian Army eleven restricted the UK Army to 109 runs for the loss of 4 in 20 overs. Set to chase a target of 110, the Indian side romped home in 16.3 overs with 5 wickets to spare.

It was an exciting match with the first half seeing some spectacular shots by the UK team matched with tight bowling by the Indian side. Held amid loud cheering and friendly rivalry, the match was thoroughly enjoyed by the two sides with the troops of the two sides cheering for their teams.

The fourteen day exercise will not only see the two forces matching upto each other in terms of militarily, but also interact socially and culturally to develop camaraderie which is expected to be mutually beneficial to both.

The friendly match between the two armies served as an ice breaking exercise. This precedes the joint exercise in the sandy desert terrain in the Western sector of Rajasthan, where the skills and experience of both will be on display and be shared.

Ajeya Warrior 2017 is the third joint biannual Indo UK war exercise. The first exercise was conducted in Belgaum Karnataka in 2013. The Indian Army contingent had travelled to UK for the second exercise in 2015.
