Indian women’s cricket’s teen sensation Jemimah Rodrigues has had many interactions with journalists before. Especially, after her record double hundred in a U-19 domestic tourney for Mumbai last year.

However on Tuesday, her nervousness was palpable and the excitement visible. And why not, the 17-year-old was in the middle of her first formal presser as a member of the Indian cricket team, which left for the important tour of South Africa on Wednesday.

The Bandra girl was all smiles and shy as she took the chair with all eyes on her after the team’s practice session at the MCA Academy in Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai.

“Yes of course, I am a bit nervousness being part of the Indian team. I am really looking forward to the SA tour. It’s my first trip with the Indian team,” Jemimah said.

“Everyone has supported me really well and they have not made me feel like I am a new girl or the youngest one in the team. They have gelled up well with me. I am a bit nervous, but I am excited too,” she added.

A few minutes before Rodrigues took the chair, captain Mithali Raj was all praise for the young protege in the pre-departure press conference.

Jemimah said she felt nervous when she met Mithali. “The first time I got very nervous. Mithali Raj is my idol in Indian cricket and seeing them batting and working so hard in the nets is an inspiration for me. The commitment and effort they put in even at their age is amazing. So, I am really glad and looking forward to many more experiences with them,” she said.

On Monday, the Indian team had meeting with the great Sachin Tendulkar who discussed with the players on how to play in South Africa. Rodrigues said she was in awe of the batting maestro.

“Meeting Sachin sir was an awesome moment for each one of us. He’s one of the best examples of a good batsman, but more than that a humble human being. He spoke to each one of us, gave us many fine tips, and made us feel comfortable and answered our questions. He gave us a lot of confidence before travelling to South Africa. Meeting him was a blessing for us,” she said.

Asked if she sees her chance of making into the XI on the tough tour of South Africa, the excited teenager said: “Whenever I get a chance, I will be happy to play there, perform and do well for the team.”
