In order to ensure uninterrupted suburban local services during rains, the Western Railway has undertaken several preparatory works including cleaning of culverts, desilting of drains, installations of pumps and special maintenance of infrastructure on the Churchgate-Virar line.

These works will be completed by June 1, 2017 in the first phase. Joint inspection by Railway and BMC officials have already started in this regard, a statement issued by the Western Railway said here today.

WR has also identified flood-prone areas on its section.

On this basis, more attention will be paid to certain vulnerable sections such as those near Grant Road, Elphinstone Road, Dadar, Matunga Rd-Mahim yard, Bandra-Khar, Andheri-Jogeshwari and Nalasopara-Virar, the statement said.

Giving the details of special pre-monsoon action, WR also said that lifting of tracks in low line areas has already been completed in Mahim yard on the Harbour line and between Bandra-Khar down slow line as water logging was observed at these locations last year.

Funds have been provided by the MCGM and this work will be completed in three phases. The first phase will be completed before the onset of monsoon, followed by second and third round after necessary inspections and based on requirement," it said.

Besides, WR will install about 88 diesel pumps at low lying locations such as Marine Lines, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Matunga Road, Mahim, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Nalasopara, and Virar, it said adding cutting of vulnerable trees in the vicinity of tracks will also be done.
