Sensex touches all-time high of 34,175.21; Nifty too reaches new peak

Key indices on Friday touched new heights over positive global cues. In sectorial indices, banking & financials, infra and metals stocks continued to gain. At 10:37 AM, Sensex was trading in green by 171.46 to 34,140.45 while Nifty too touched 10,551.25 points. 

State Bank of India, Hindalco Industries, Yes Bank, Indiabulls Housing Finance, L&T, UltraTech Cement, Vedanta, Tata Steel and Maruti Suzuki were among the early gainers. But HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, TCS and Infosys were mildly lower on strong rupee.

Brokers said improved liquidity in the market following continuous foreign fund inflows and increased buying by domestic institutional investors after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme boosted trading sentiments.

The finance ministry on Thursday sought Parliament’s nod for extra expenditure of ₹ 80,000 crore towards recapitalisation of bad loans-saddled public sector banks through bonds.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net of ₹ 212.05 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) made purchases worth a ₹ 325.24 crore on Thursday, as per provisional exchange data.

Prominent gainers in the Sensex kitty were Yes Bank, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, SBI, Tata Steel, ITC Ltd, IndusInd Bank, Coal India, TCS, HDFC Ltd and Kotak Bank, gaining by up to 1.86 per cent.

The rupee weakened by 8 paise to trade at 63.61 against the US dollar in opening session today due to increased demand for the American currency from importers.

The dollar's gains against major world currencies after a strong US manufacturing data also impacted the rupee sentiment, a currency dealer said.

Yesterday, the rupee had retreated from its multi-year high and ended marginally lower by 5 paise at 63.53 against the US currency.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex recovered by 123.37 points, or 0.36 per cent, at 33,916.75 in early trade today.
