Probing the infamous PNB scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned SBI offcials of DGM rank. According to news agency ANI, CBI probed DGM rank officials from SBI branch in Frankfurt and Mauritius at its Mumbai office. Both the Punjab National Bank and the State Bank of India had issued buyers credit to exporters of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi's firms.

The more details are awaited in this regard. Meanwhile, the government on Thursday said it is still awaiting a response from Hong Kong on the arrest of diamantaire Nirav Modi who is wanted in connection with the 13,500 PNB loan fraud.

In a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha last week, Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh had said, "the ministry has sought the provisional arrest of Nirav Deepak Modi by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the People's Republic of China."

He was asked whether the ministry had any clue about the whereabouts of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.

A provisional arrest is made pending a formal extradition request.

In response to a related question today, Raveesh Kumar, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, said, "We are aware of the written reply submitted to Parliament which shared that Nirav Modi is in Hong Kong. We have requested Hong Kong authorities to surrender Nirav Modi. There is an agreement between India and Hong Kong about surrender of fugitive offenders. We are still awaiting a response."

"So far we have not received any information about NiravModi or about his arrest from the the Hong Kong authorities," he said.

Modi, who is wanted in connection with the multi-crore scam at the Punjab National Bank, is reportedly in Hong Kong which is a specially administrative region of China.

Earlier this week, China said that it had given a green light to Hong Kong on the arrest of Modi.

Asked about India's request, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing here that "according to the one country two systems and basic law of the HKSAR, under the assistance and authorisation of the central government, the HKSAR can make proper arrangement on judicial mutual assistance with other countries," he said.

"If India makes relevant request to the HKSAR, we believe the HKSAR will follow the basic law and relevant laws and under relevant judicial agreements with India with the relevant issue," he said.

The government has suspended the passports of both Modi and Choksi.

Modi and Choksi had fled the country after the alleged bank fraud came to light in February.
