The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday tightened the noose around billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi,  accused of defrauding the country’s second largest bank Punjab National Bank of Rs 11,400 crore.

A day after ED seized movable properties worth Rs 5,100 crore belonging to the family, the CBI registered a second FIR in the case alleging draud worth Rs 4,887 crore and raided 26 locations in six states belonging to Choksi’s Gitanjali Group of Companies.

The ED too registered another money laundering case under the PMLA Act against Modi and Gitanjali Gems and carried out raids at 35 new places in 11 states.

The three companies named in the FIR filed on Friday are Gitanjali Gems Limited, Gili India Limited and Nakshatra Brands Limited.

The CBI’s FIR against Gitanjali Gems is based on a  February 13 complaint by PNB. In this case, the alleged loss to PNB is estimated at Rs 4,886.72 crore, which is part of the Rs 11,400 crore sum.

They agency also stated said Gokul Nath Shetty and Manoj Karat, the bank employees who allegedly conspired with Nirav Modi, Choksi and others, sent unauthorised LoUs and Foreign Letters of Credit to overseas branches of Indian banks for release of funds to accused companies’ suppliers or to clear liabilities of accused companies.

According to CBI, searches are being conducted at 26 different premises related to Choksi and other directors of his companies. It includes factories, plants, offices and residencies of these people.
